Can an AI call customer service for you?

Yes, for more calls than you'd expect. The exceptions are the ones where the company has to be sure it's talking to you.

Yes, with one catch

An AI assistant can phone a company's customer service line, get through the menu, wait on hold, ask your question and write down the answer. For a lot of everyday calls that's the whole job. Where's my order? When is the technician coming? Can the delivery move to Thursday? Is there an outage on my street?

The catch is verification. Many companies will only discuss an account with the account holder, and they check. When that happens the assistant can't stand in for you, and shouldn't. It can still do the waiting and hand you the call once a person answers. So the honest answer is yes for questions, status and scheduling, and yes up to the point where they ask who you are for the rest.

The calls it can finish alone

These have one thing in common. The company would tell anybody who had the order number.

  • Status. Where a package is, whether a repair is finished, how far a refund has got.
  • Scheduling. Booking the technician, moving the delivery window, arranging a pickup.
  • Plain questions. Opening hours, the return policy, whether the part is in stock.
  • Chasing. The callback that was promised on Monday and hasn't happened.

The calls where they need to know it's you

Changing anything on an account. Canceling a contract. Disputing a charge. Nearly anything at a bank or an insurer. Before the agent does any of it they'll ask for a date of birth, a security word, or a code they've just texted to your phone.

An assistant answering your security questions is a bad idea even in the cases where it would work. Don't give passwords, PINs or security answers to any assistant, ours included. It's also, fairly, not what the company agreed to when it set the questions up. There's more about where we draw these lines on the trust page.

Skip the queue, then do the talking

For those calls there's a middle option, and it's the one people end up using most. Ask for the call and say you want to be connected once a person answers.

Your assistant works through the phone menu and waits through the hold music. When someone who can help is on the line, it says "one moment" and rings your mobile. You pick up already talking to the right person, and you answer the security questions yourself. If you can't pick up, it says sorry to the agent and arranges a callback.

You lose nothing by doing it this way, only the forty minutes of piano. We've covered it properly in let an AI wait on hold for you.

It never pays

On a call, the assistant never gives out a card number and never agrees to a charge. Not a late fee, not a service charge, not "just a small admin cost to process that today". A booking or an appointment is the most it will commit you to.

This is deliberate, and we think it's what makes the rest safe to hand over. If a call turns out to need payment, the summary tells you the amount, what it's for and how the company wants it paid. Then you decide.

What to tell it before it dials

The company name, and the number if you have one from a bill or an email. One sentence about what you want. The reference they'll ask for first, whether that's an order number or a ticket number. And what you'd accept: any morning next week, a replacement or a refund, Thursday but not Friday.

Say whether you want the call handled or want to be connected. If you're not sure, ask to be connected. The worst case is that you spend three minutes on a call you could have skipped. Our guide can an AI make phone calls covers the basics if this is new to you.

Five calls, and how each one goes

Here's how the split looks with real examples.

  • The missing package. Hand it over. The assistant gives the order number, gets the status and the new delivery date, and writes down the reference for the case.
  • The internet outage. Hand it over. It asks whether there's a known fault in your area and when it's expected to be fixed.
  • The dishwasher repair visit. Hand it over. It books the visit inside the times you gave and notes what the technician needs from you.
  • The wrong charge on a bill. Join the call. They'll verify you, and you'll want to hear how they explain it.
  • Canceling a subscription. Join the call. There'll be a security check and then an offer to stay, and whether to take the offer is your decision.

And when the call goes nowhere

Sometimes the office is closed, or the line drops, or the agent asks for a call back tomorrow. The summary says so in plain words and tells you what was tried. If the agent asked whether they were speaking to an AI, they were told yes.

No call comes back to you as a vague "done". You get what was asked, what was answered, and what happens next.

Common questions

Will customer service agents talk to an AI?

For general questions, order status and scheduling, usually yes. The assistant says it's calling on your behalf and says it's an AI whenever it's asked. If the agent needs the account holder, it can bring you onto the call.

Can it get through automated phone menus?

Yes. It listens to the options and chooses the ones that lead to a person who can help, then waits through the hold music.

Can an AI get me a refund?

It can ask for one, chase one that's been promised, and write down the reference and how long it should take. If the company needs to verify you first, ask to be connected and make the request yourself once the agent is on the line.

What do I get after the call?

A written summary with the outcome, the details (amounts, dates, reference numbers) and the next step, along with the written conversation. We keep the written call, not the audio.
