Get ChatGPT to make a phone call
You can talk to ChatGPT all day. Getting it to ring the tire place takes one connection and a decent sentence.

Can ChatGPT make a phone call?
Not by itself, no. You can talk to ChatGPT, and it'll talk back. What you can't do is ask it to phone somebody else: the tire place for a price, the landlord about the leak, the restaurant that only takes bookings by phone.
It can do it with a phone line attached. You connect ChatGPT to a line once. After that, when you ask for a call, ChatGPT writes the brief and the line does the dialing and the talking. When the call ends, ChatGPT tells you what was said and what was agreed.
So ChatGPT isn't the voice on the call. It's more like the person who writes a good note for the assistant who's about to pick up the phone.
What does the setup involve?
Three steps, and the middle one is the only one that feels like setup. It uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), which is the standard way an AI assistant plugs into an outside tool. You don't need to know more about it than that.
We're leaving out where things sit in ChatGPT's menus on purpose. They move. Look for where your version adds a connector, and the rest is on our side.
Once you're connected, do one more thing. In Settings, under Connect, there's a block of instructions written for your assistant. Paste it into ChatGPT. It teaches it to brief a call the way you would, to wait for the result, and never to tell you something is booked when it isn't.
- Get a line. Pick a number in your area code. About a minute, and the plans are on the pricing page.
- Add the connector. In ChatGPT, add the address cosvoice.com/mcp as a connector. A CosVoice page opens. Sign in and press Allow. There's no key to paste.
- Ask for a call. Say what you want in a sentence, including what to accept if the first answer is no.
What should the prompt say?
Here's one that works: "Call the Italian place on Main Street and get a table for two on Friday at 7:30. Take 7:00 to 8:30 if that's gone."
Look at what's in it. Who to call. What you want, with the numbers (two people, Friday, 7:30). And the fallback, which is the bit people leave out. Without it, the host says "we've got 8:15" and the call has nowhere to go except back to you with a question. With it, the line takes the 8:15 and you're booked.
You don't need to write a script, and you shouldn't. The line knows how to open a call, how to give a name and a callback number, and how to confirm the details back before it hangs up. Your job is the purpose and the limits.
A few more in the same shape: "Ring the dentist and move my Thursday cleaning to an afternoon next week." "Phone the landlord about the leak, and tell me what they said." "Call the tire place and ask what four all-season tires for the van would cost, fitted. Don't book anything."
What happens while the call is going on?
ChatGPT gets an id for the call straight away, and then there's a wait. Calls take minutes, not seconds. A person has to pick up, find the book, check with the kitchen.
Meanwhile the line is having an ordinary phone conversation. It says who it is and who it's calling for. If anyone asks whether they're talking to an AI, it says yes. It never pretends to be you, or to be a person at all.
You can ask ChatGPT to check back on the call after a few minutes. Or you can set the line up to wake your assistant when the call is written up, which we cover in wake your assistant the moment a call ends.
What comes back?
A write-up, not a recording. We keep the written call and not the audio. You get the outcome in a line, a short summary of how it went, the details the line captured (times, prices, names, reference numbers) and the full transcript.
The outcome is honest, and sometimes that means it's not the one you wanted. If the restaurant put you on a waitlist, it says waitlisted. If nobody picked up, it says so. If the place wants a deposit, that comes back marked as needing you, because the line never gives out a card number and never agrees to a charge.
Read the outcome first and the summary second. Most days you'll stop there.
What if the business calls back?
They reach the same line. The person who was rung can ring back and get the same assistant, with your standing instructions already in place, and it takes down what they have to say. You get a written summary of that call as well.
This is the half people forget when they think about an AI making calls. Half of getting anything done by phone is being there when the callback comes.
What if my ChatGPT has no connectors?
You need a version of ChatGPT that supports connectors. If yours doesn't, the line is still useful without it. Place calls from your CosVoice dashboard and read the write-ups there, or call and text the line from your own mobile, where whatever you say is treated as an instruction.
And if you use more than one assistant, you don't need more than one line. The same number connects to Claude, Cursor or a Grok Bot. The short version of all this lives on our ChatGPT page, and can an AI make phone calls answers the wider question.
Common questions
Does ChatGPT do the talking on the call?
No. ChatGPT writes the brief. The CosVoice line holds the conversation in a natural voice, then hands back the outcome, the details and the transcript.
Do I need an API key to connect ChatGPT?
No. You add the address as a connector, sign in on the CosVoice page that opens, and press Allow. There's no key to paste.
Does a call placed from ChatGPT cost extra?
No. Calls use your CosVoice plan's minutes, whichever assistant asked for them. Texts and email don't use minutes.
Can ChatGPT pay a deposit over the phone for me?
No. The line never reads out a card number or agrees to a charge. A booking or an appointment is the most it commits you to, and anything involving money comes back to you.
Can I stop ChatGPT using my line?
Yes. You can cut off any connected assistant in Settings, under Connect. The line keeps working on its own afterwards.
