How to give your AI agent its own phone number

Your agent can already read, write and plan. Give it a number and it can ring the restaurant as well.

What changes when your agent has a number

If you already use an agent like Grok, ChatGPT or Claude, there are two ways to give it a phone number. You can build the phone part yourself, which means renting a number and wiring up the voice. Or you can connect a finished line that already knows how to hold a call. The second takes a few minutes. The first takes a good deal longer, and it's the right choice for fewer people than you'd think.

Either way, the change is the same. Until now your agent has lived behind a screen. It can draft the email to the contractor, but it can't ring him. It can find the restaurant, but if the place only takes bookings by phone, the job lands back on you. A number closes that gap. The agent can dial out, people can ring it back, and you can call it yourself from the car.

There's a quieter change too. The agent gets somewhere to be reached. A number the plumber can save, and a callback number it can leave that isn't your mobile.

Route one: build the phone part yourself

You rent a number from a telephony provider. You connect it to a voice system that turns speech into something your agent can work with, then turns the agent's replies back into speech, quickly enough that the person on the other end doesn't hear a gap. That's the easy half. The other half is everything a real phone call throws at you.

  • Interruptions. People talk over each other. Your agent has to stop and listen when they do.
  • Answering machines. Plenty of calls land on a recorded greeting, and the agent needs to notice instead of chatting to a beep.
  • Menus and hold music. It has to press the right option, then wait, sometimes for a long while.
  • Rules. What it may agree to, what it must never say, when to give up and come back to you.
  • The record. Somebody has to write down what was agreed and get it in front of you.

Is building ever the right choice?

Yes, if phone calls are your product. If you're making something that thousands of other people will use, you want control over every piece, and you'll accept the work that comes with it. We go through that trade in build or buy telephony for AI agents.

But if you want your own assistant to book a table and chase a quote, it's a lot of plumbing for one dinner. You'd be building a phone company to avoid making a phone call.

Route two: connect a line that already works

A finished line is a number with the call handling already done. The voice, the manners, the waiting on hold, the summary afterwards. Your agent doesn't have to learn to speak. It asks the line to place a call, says what it wants out of it, and reads the result.

That's what CosVoice is. One line is one phone number in your area code plus one email address, attached to one agent. It works with Grok, ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor. It also works with nothing connected at all, which is handy while you're still deciding. There's a longer description on our page about a phone number for your AI agent.

The steps

Here's the whole thing in order. None of it needs a developer.

  • Pick a number. Choose your area code, then the exact number from a short list. US numbers today.
  • Give the line a name. It comes with its own email address too.
  • Save it as a contact. The line knows your mobile, so when you call or text it, whatever you say is an instruction.
  • Connect your agent. Paste one address into the agent's connector settings and click Allow. There's no key to copy. Or point the agent at cosvoice.com/skill and tell it to read the page and give itself a phone number. That page is written for assistants, not for you.
  • Ask for a call. Something small and real. More on that below.

What your agent should know before its first call

The line has rules your agent can't talk it out of, and it's better the agent knows them up front. It says it's an AI whenever anyone asks. It never gives out a card number and never agrees to a charge, so if a restaurant wants a deposit, that comes back to you as a decision. And it makes one call for one reason. It isn't a way to ring five hundred strangers.

What the agent does control is the brief. Who to call, what to ask for, what's acceptable if the first choice is gone, what name to leave. "Book a table Friday" will work. "Table for four, Friday at 7:30, anything up to 8:15 is fine, under Graham" works better, because now the line can say yes to a counter-offer without coming back to check. We've written a whole piece on call briefs that work.

One limit to plan around. Texts from the line to other people are limited for now, so if something has to arrive, have the agent send it as a call or an email.

After the call, the agent gets what you get: a written summary with the outcome and the details. If it has access to your calendar it can put the booking in. If it doesn't, that bit is yours.

A good first call to try

Don't start with the hard one. Start with a call where being wrong costs nothing. Ask the hardware shop what time they close on Sunday, or whether the bakery does a gluten-free loaf. Read the summary when it comes back. Was the answer there? Was anything missing that a better brief would have caught?

Then try a real booking with some room in it, a table or a haircut, with a first choice and a fallback. Once the summaries keep matching what you asked for, you'll stop reading the transcripts, and that's when it starts to feel like help instead of homework. The docs cover connecting each assistant.

Common questions

Can ChatGPT or Claude make a phone call on their own?

Not by themselves. They need a phone line to call from. Once a line is connected, the assistant asks the line to place the call, and reads the written summary when it's over.

Which area codes can I choose from?

Any US area code that has numbers available. Most people pick their own, since that's the number the businesses they call will see.

Can my agent have more than one number?

An agent connects to one line at a time, and you choose which one when you approve the connection. One account can hold several lines, say a personal one and one for the business. Connect again to give the agent another.

Do I need an agent at all to use the line?

No. The line works on its own. You can call it, text it, or ask for a call from your dashboard, and connect an assistant later if you want to.
